GC Pharm said Thursday that it would import and distribute Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine in Korea.

“We will import and distribute 40 million doses of Moderna's Covid-19 vaccine in Korea,” GC Pharma said. The company added that it would also win the regulatory approval process for the Moderna vaccine.

The company said the contract's purpose is to support the government's vaccine rollout promptly. The arrangement is part of GC Pharma's agreements with Moderna and the government of the Republic of Korea.

Earlier, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency said it would bring in 40 million doses of coronavirus vaccine developed by Moderna in Korea in the second quarter of this year.

"We are proud to partner with the government and Moderna to support distributing Covid-19 vaccines," GC Pharma CEO Huh Eun-chul said. "Preventing infectious diseases is a top priority for pharmaceutical companies, and based on our accumulated capabilities, we will explore various ways to prepare for Covid-19 and public health emergency."

Moderna's Covid-19 vaccine is made from messenger RNA that makes up the spike protein of the virus. The vaccine shows 94 percent efficacy in preventing infection and has to be transported and stored at minus 20 degrees Celsius to avoid spoilage.
