The Ministry of Health and Welfare said Saturday it would establish a temporary dementia policy division as part of efforts to support the Moon Jae-in administration’s key health care pledges.

The ministry’s notice to revise related legislation -- to enhance the state’s role in treating dementia and managing dementia patients -- is put on its homepage until the end of this month.

According to the law revision notice, the ministry will establish a dementia policy department which will operate until Sept. 30, 2019. For this, the ministry hired six more employees under the division.

The division will focus on establishing comprehensive measures for dementia treatment, conducting surveys on the elderly with dementia, reviewing dementia-related laws, and supporting patients with dementia and their families, among others.

“We have agreed with the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Regulatory Reform Committee (on establishing a temporary division),” a ministry official said.
