GSK Korea has recently released a clinical trial result, which confirmed the effectiveness of its new hair loss treatment, Avodart (ingredient: dutasteride), on the male pattern alopecia

In the multinational phase 3 trial on 917 male patients, Avodart demonstrated a significant improvement effect in M-shaped hair loss as the professional photo evaluation of the forehead was 70.6 percent higher, according to the presentation at the 11th Korean Society for Hair Transplantation Conference last week.

More than eight out of 10, or 81.1 percent, of Korean alopecia patients have M-shaped hair loss.

Professor Choi Ji-woong of the Department of Dermatology at Ajou University Hospital made the presentation, “Dutasteride(Avodart); All Time Favorite in Real World.” Professor Choi paid particular attention to the effect of Avodart on the hair growth effect on the forehead.

“When treating hair loss, the most important factor for patients is the hair growth effect, and among them, patients expect a visible effect of hair growth on the forehead, which can be seen immediately,” Choi said.

M-shaped hair loss, in which hair falls out from the forehead, has an inadequate response to medical treatment. However, Avodart showed a significant effect on M-shaped hair loss and improvement of the number and thickness of hair compared to Finasteride in multinational clinical trials, including those in Korea, Professor Choi added.

“The satisfaction level of patients who received a prescription for Avodart was high,” he said.

Choi stressed that it is an effective and less burdensome treatment at any age from the beginning, noting that according to Japanese treatment guidelines, dutasteride is strongly recommended as the first-line treatment for male pattern baldness.

“It is important to take a hair loss drug for a long time to maintain the therapeutic effect continuously,” Choi said. “However, hair loss patients tend to be reluctant to take long-term treatment due to concerns about the side effects of hair loss drugs.”

Choi pointed out that there is not much concern about the long-term use of Avodart, as the drug has been prescribed for more than 20 years as a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia and over 10 years for hair loss.
