Korean actress Han Ye-seul Saturday uploaded a picture of two scars on her body, saying that she suffered from a “medical accident” while getting a lipoma, or a fatty tissue lump, removed.

Lipomas are soft, movable, and painless lumps found under the skin. Although they are classified as tumors, most are harmless. They are commonly found on the upper back, shoulder, and abdomen with around one person out of 1,000 getting them at some point, according to WebMD. The causes for them are unknown, but some say that genetics, obesity, and a lack of exercise might be possible reasons.

Although most are less than five centimeters in size, the physician in charge of the operation stated Han’s was around five to eight centimeters, although he did not indicate the area it was located due to patient privacy reasons.

Professor Lee Ji-hyun of Gangnam CHA Medical Center who operated announced that he was sorry to both Han and her fans while acknowledging his mistake on a YouTube program called Medical Channel Beyond D.

“Because she is an actress, I suggested removing [the lipoma] from below so she could cover it up,” said Lee, while noting that it is easier to remove the tumor right around the lipoma. He clarified that the medical accident occurred when he cut through the skin with an electric knife while stripping and exfoliating the lump.

Lee in the YouTube video said he acknowledged his mistake as soon as it happened to Han’s guardian on Apr. 2, and also had the nurses take a picture of the scarred area a day after the surgery on Apr. 3.

Despite Lee’s claims, Han wrote in her initial Instagram post that Gangnam CHA Medical Center did not mention any form of compensation even though two weeks had passed since the surgery. “I don’t think any form of compensation will comfort me,” she said adding that she felt saddened from having to get treated for her scars on a daily basis.

In response, the hospital released an official statement explaining what happened while also mentioning discussions for “further compensation” when Han completes treatment.

“In the process of using a heated tool to remove the lipoma, a burn occurred on the skin (the oval shape in her photo). The area of the burn is located on her torso below the left armpit. We are providing support in hopes of full restoration through plastic surgery,” the hospital was quoted saying by the Soompi, a website on Korean pop culture.

Han was transferred to a burn skin rehabilitation hospital for further treatment, they added.
