A provincial court sentenced a jail term to a drunk patient who used violence to threaten medical workers at an emergency room in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province.

The Cheongju District Court ordered the patient, who was indicted for violating the Emergency Medical Service Act, six-month imprisonment and a two-year probation. The court also ordered 200 hours of social service.

The prosecutors indicted the patient for verbal abuse and threatening medical staffs at the ER in a Cheongju hospital on Feb. 1.

Visiting the ER under the influence, the patient went wild after hearing from a doctor that he should return home and revisit the hospital later because the visitor was drunk. The patient is also on charges of threatening to take revenge against the doctors and nurses on the phone three times the next day.

“The drunken patient used violence against emergency medical workers and was unable to agree with the victims,” the court said. “Although he was punished for his eight violent acts with fines before, he did not behave himself and committed a crime again. Therefore, the corresponding punishment is necessary.”
