1014-bed institution feature three-bed wards, single-room ICUs

Ewha Womans University Medical Center (EUMC) has unveiled its new, up-to-date hospital, Ewha Woman University Seoul Hospital.

The medical center held a dedication ceremony for the hospital and Ewha Womans University School of Medicine in Magok District in southwestern Seoul on Monday. It took three years and 10 months to complete the construction of the hospital and medical school.

The new hospital will begin to provide service next February. Built on the space of 10,091 pyeong (33,359 square meters), the hospital is a 10-story building with six underground floors. It has 1,014 beds, and its standard wards have only three beds – instead of four or six in other institutions—to reduce risks of infection, the medical center said.

Also, all intensive care units are single rooms, it added
Patients can use both the three-bed wards and single-room ICUs without additional charges.

The medical center plans to make the new hospital as an institution focusing on severe high-risk diseases such as five major cancer, cardiovascular-cerebrovascular diseases and organ transplants while operating the existing Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital as an institution specializing in female and childrens' diseases.

Ewha Womans University Seoul Hospital will also strengthen its ability to conduct studies jointly with industries and research institutes to cope with future diseases, and run a state-of-the-art international treatment center and a premium health promotion center.

Ewha Womans University School of Medicine, built on a land of 9,917 sq. meters, is composed of a 12-story educational and research building with five underground floors, and a 12-story, 99-room dormitory that can accommodate 179 students.

The main building includes an international conference room equipped with up-to-date video conference facility, an auditorium complete with simultaneous translation facility, and Ewha Medical Simulation Center, for use by students who prepare for the skill test of the state exam for medical practitioners.

As the medical school moves to the Magok District, the space at the Mokdong hospital will be sued for clinical research, the medical center said.

Ewha University Medical Center plans to concentrate in reinvigorating clinical studies by grafting preclinical medicine as well as industrializing healthcare, through Ewha Institute of Convergence Medicine, Ewha Womans University Center for Clinical Trial, and Convergence Medical Equipment Clinical Trial Center.

“The opening of Ewha Womans University Seoul Hospital will serve as an occasion for another takeoff for our medical center through innovative treatment facilities, systems and differentiated healthcare services as well as to fulfill our ultimate mission of ‘serving and sharing,’” EUMC Director Moon Byeong-in said during the ceremony.

Moon went on to say, “We will make best efforts for the successful opening and early stabilization of Ewha Womans University Seoul Hospital as well as speed up the innovation of Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital. Through these efforts, the two hospitals will be able to secure competitiveness and jump toward research-oriented institutions, and continue to grow side by side.”
