Philips said Monday that it has unveiled its innovations in radiology to enable precision diagnosis and enhance productivity, at the 2018 Radiological Society of North America Annual Meeting (RSNA) in Chicago.
The healthcare sector is gradually shifting from volume-based to value-based medical treatment, which increases the effectiveness of medical care. The new focus aims to obtain better clinical results from limited medical resources to create a more pleasant medical environment for both patients and medical staff, the company said.
“As healthcare continues to transform from a volume- to a value-based approach, and the amount of data available for each clinical decision dramatically grows, our customers are seeking more seamless, integrated solutions to enable more precise diagnosis and treatment,” said Robert Cascella, Chief Business Leader Diagnosis & Treatment at Philips.
He went on to say, “We’ve accelerated our pace of innovation, with 70 percent of our Diagnostic Imaging portfolio renewed within the past two years. We’re also harnessing the power of artificial intelligence across the imaging enterprise, from improving workflow to supporting clinical decisions.”
Philips’ Ingenia Elition 3.0T MR is the latest advance in the company’s efforts to change to a value-based approach, according to the company’s news release. Based on the new Vega gradient, the use of ultra-high-speed and resolution inspection, which was impossible with existing hardware, the new machine has made it possible to expand significantly clinical applications and research.
It also applies the compressed SENSE, which is a technology that reduces MR imaging time based on proprietary algorithms. It can achieve high-resolution images up to twice as fast as compared to conventional MRI (2D, 3D, 4D) on all parts of the human body, it said.
The machine also contains Philips' first commercially available MRI scans 3D APT, which can detect changes in tumor stage and ischemia by measuring protein content or acidity without the use of a contrast media, while the AI-based SmartExam feature automates the inspection process and improves the workflow of the medical staff.
Philips will also unveil IQon Spectral computed tomography (CT), which is an effective way to reduce the frequency of follow-up by 30 percent, at the conference, according to the news release.
The equipment can acquire spectral data, including overall CT image and constituent material information of human internal structure, by using the same capturing method as conventional CT, it said.
Doctors can also analyze the spectral imaging information as needed without the need for prior spectral screening to reduce re-imaging, use of contrast agents and radiation exposure. Also, the picture archiving and communication system (PACS) makes it efficient for medical professionals to check the spectral image conveniently at any time.
During the convention, the company will unveil other types of machinery such as AI Breast, a breast ultrasound testing solution that will help diagnose precise and efficient diagnoses with rich anatomical intelligence, Azurion. It is a next-generation interventional x-ray machine that incorporates smart workflow concepts for intervention procedures and IntelliSpace Discovery 3.0, an open research platform for research and development of AI healthcare solutions, it said.
