Asan Medical Center said Wednesday that it has introduced real-time location Internet of Things (IOT) technology sensors to all portable infusion pumps in the hospital.
A portable infusion pump is a medical device that automatically injects analgesics, anticancer drugs, and fluids through a patient's blood vessels in small quantities at regular intervals.

Until now, AMC nurses needed to spend a considerable amount of time locating the current position of the portable infusion pump and if it functioned properly.
If there was an urgent need for administering a drug to a patient suffering from cancer or arrhythmia by an infusion pump, medical staff also needed to call different wards inside the hospital to figure out if one was available.
By attaching the IoT sensor to the infusion pump, the nurse can now check the status of the device with a single glance, which in turn can improve the efficiency of the operation while enhancing the quality of the medical care by allowing the urgent patient to administer the medicine needed more quickly.
Nurses can now locate the infusion pump by typing in a specific internet address into the computer in each ward and logging in to get a real-time location of the machine.
Based on the Wi-Fi network already built in the hospital, AMC will only allow access through the hospital's internal server.
To get a better grasp of the improved convenience, the Asan Medical Center Innovation Design Center surveyed 50 nurses about changes in work after attaching IoT sensors to a portable infusion pump.
As a result, the nurses replied that they managed to reduce the time spent locating mobile from 40 minutes per day to about 15 minutes. Also, the new IoT sensor lowered the psychological stress index for infusion pump management by half from 7.3 to 3.6 points out of 10 points.
“The hospital expects the attachment of IoT sensor to the infusion pump will help to maximize the efficiency of the medical staff and improve the quality of medical care,” said Professor Kim Jong-hyuk, director of AMC’s Planning and Coordination Division.
AMC plans to gradually expand the use of IoT sensors to other medical devices such as portable electrocardiographs and ultrasound devices, and mobile computer image intensifiers (C-arms) used in surgery fields, he added.
