A research team, led by Professor Lee Kye-young at Konkuk University Medical Center’s Precision Medicine Lung Cancer Center, said it has registered two additional patents related to the team’s invention of a new diagnostic method for lung cancer.

Lee’s team in December registered the world’s first patent on a diagnostic method to detect epidermal growth factor receptor gene mutation in lung cancer patients by using extracellular vesicles (EVs) isolated from bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. The invention drew attention as a non-invasive liquid biopsy to detect cancerous DNA, as opposed to the conventional invasive biopsies.

One of the two additional patents is called “Composition for diagnosing lung cancer, assaying drug response and prognosis through analysis of extracellular vesicle isolated from blood” (registration No. 10-1979989).

The other is “Extracellular vesicles lysis buffer and method for extracting nucleic acids using thereof” (registration No. 10-1981398).

“The additional patent registration demonstrated the technological power of Konkuk University Medical Center’s Precision Medicine Lung Cancer Center and Liquid Pathology Laboratory,” Lee said. “With this method, it will be possible to apply precision medicine to the diagnosis and treatment for lung cancer patients.”
