The Catholic University of Korea Eunpyeong St. Mary’s Hospital said Tuesday it has built an artificial intelligence-based “Voice Electronic Nursing Record” (Voice ENR) system, which helps nurses to keep medical records using voice recognition.

A nurse demonstrates the Voice Electronic Nursing Record (Voice ENR) system at the Catholic University of Korea Eunpyeong St. Mary’s Hospital on Monday.

The hospital had a signboard hanging ceremony for its Voice Lab for EHR on Monday and demonstrated a speech-recognition nursing record system synchronized with the hospital system.

For the past two years, the hospital, Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital and Puzzle AI, a developer of voice-recognition software, jointly developed the Voice ENR system. The hospital said its system had excellent quality in voice recognition accuracy and user convenience.

To date, nurses at the hospital have documented medical records at the nursing station after tending to patients. During the process, nurses spent more time on documentation. Sometimes, they could omit some information or delay the documentation.

Eunpyeong St. Mary’s Hospital’s Voice ENR allows nurses to do real-time documentation through voice records while they are nursing patients in a patient room. This system enables nurses to focus on nursing and communication with patients instead of spending more time in documentation.

“For the demonstration, the system was showcased in a general ward. The system automatically converted the voice of the medical staff to correct texts even in the room noise environment, and transmitted them directly to the hospital system, which received a lot of praise from the medical staff,” the hospital said.
