The number of brain dead donors per 1 million people is two digits

The number of organ donors of brain dead is growing.

According to Korea Organ Donation Agency, as of 31st December 2016, a total of brain dead donors were 573, up 14.3% from 501 in 2015. The number of brain dead donors per 1 million people(pmp), increased to 11 from 9.9 and marked two digits.

Korea Organ Donation Agency explains the number of brain dead donors is proportionate to the number population.

The agency said “Korea stands unchallenged in Asia, but needs more compared with advanced countries. With Korea that marks pmp 11, it can get up-to-date of other countries such as Germany(10.8), New Zealand(11.5), Brazil(14.1) etc. and has more potential to develop more.”

Direct Jong-won Ha at Korea Organ Donation Agency said “We have made efforts to train medical teams, operate DID(Donor Improvement Program), the program to improve brain dead donors in cooperation with hospital, and build up protocols fit for each hospital. The efforts seem to bear fruits. Many brain dead people didn’t have chances to donate organs for many years. The key to increasing organ donation is active cooperation with medical teams.”
