Bacchus-D, a nutritional tonic made by Dong-A Pharm, became the quasi-medicinal product made in greatest volume last year.

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS)식품의약품안전처 Wednesday released the 2016 production results of quasi-medicinal products. Last year, the total output of quasi-medicinal products had increased 4.9 percent from 2015 to 1.96 trillion won ($1.73 billion).

Most of the production concerned with every necessity, such as toothpaste, sanitary pads, drinking products, hair dye products, and anti-hair loss products. The output of these products alone amounted to 1.56 trillion won.

Toothpaste accounted for the largest portion of 29.4 percent, or 572.7 billion won, followed by sanitary pads with 297.9 billion won (15.3 percent), drinking products with 297.7 billion won (15.3 percent), hair dye products with 238.9 billion won(12.3 percent) and anti-hair loss products 159.9 billion won(8.2 percent).

Bacchus-D, the so-called national energy drink made by Dong-A Pharm, topped the list of domestic production of quasi-medicinal products. Dong-A produced some 169.7 billion won worth of Bacchus D last year, and sell it mostly at pharmacies.

Bacchus-F distributed through convenient stores took the third spot with 63 billion won worth of production. The amount of production of these two items totaled 232.7 billion won, accounting for 78.2 percent of drinking products and 12 percent of total quasi-medicinal production.

Besides Bacchus-related items, Dong-A Pharm동아제약 produced 29.7 billion won worth of Gagrin Strong, which took the ninth place.

The total output of quasi-medicinal products made by Dong-A Pharm amounted to 298.1 billion won, following the frontrunner AmorePacific아모레퍼시픽 with 323.1 billion won. Given AmorePacific is a cosmetics maker, Dong-A is the largest drugmaker in the category of quasi-medicinal products.

Besides Dong-A’s products, among the top-30 list of quasi-medicinal products were Gas Hwalmyeongsu made by Dongwha Pharm동화약품, Lemona and Lemona S made by Kyung Nam Pharm경남제약 and the Shirin Med F toothpaste made by Bukwang Pharm부광약품.

Dongwha Pharm and Kyung Nam Pharm produced Gas Hwal worth of 17.5 billion won (12th place) and Lemona worth of 12.8 billion won (21st place), respectively, last year. Also, Bukwang Pharm and Kyung Nam Pharm manufactured the Shirin Med F worth of 12.5 billion won (22nd place) and Lemona S worth of 7.9 billion won (28th place), respectively.
