Myongji Hospital said a research paper on a Covid-19 patient by Professor Park Sang-joon of the Department of Pulmonary has been most cited worldwide in the 10-year history of the Journal of Korean Medical Science (JKMS).

Professor Park’s thesis demonstrates clinical symptoms of Covid-19 patients for the first time in Korea. Park also evaluated the efficacy of Kaletra (Lopinavir/Ritonavir), an anti-AIDS therapy, during the treatment process of pneumonia. These studies have promoted local medical researches excellence in the world, the hospital said. 

Professor Park received the 12th “Yoon Kwang-yull Medical Prize” on Thursday at the Korean Academy of Medical Sciences' annual meeting. The award, accompanied by prize money of 10 million won ($9,111), has encouraged Korean medical scholars to contribute their research achievements to local journals, the hospital added. 

“The thesis written by Professor Park had the largest number of citations in the last 10 years among all research papers published in the journal, and his thesis has also been most referred to by foreign journals,” JKMS Editor Hong Sung-tae said.

Professor Park said, “I reported clinical cases after treating the third coronavirus patient in Korea to help medical workers treat future patients. I am grateful to be of assistance for both Korean and foreign patients and their doctors.”

The thesis’ title is “Case of the Index Patient Who Caused Tertiary Transmission of Coronavirus Disease 2019 in Korea: the Application of Lopinavir/Ritonavir for the Treatment of COVID-19 Pneumonia Monitored by Quantitative RT-PCR.”
