Institut Pasteur Korea (IPK) said Friday that it has agreed to team up with Institut Pasteur to form a global research unit, Ai3D, for image-based profiling of new drug discovery and development using artificial intelligence.

The international research team aims to develop next-generation new drug technology by combining the image-based screening of Institut Pasteur Korea and the computational biology of Institut Pasteur in France.

Institut Pasteur Korea (IPK) said Friday that it would establish a global research unit, Ai3D, with Institut Pasteur in France for image-based profiling of new drug discovery and development using artificial intelligence.

The joint research team plans to develop an innovative deep learning technique that combines an automated screening platform with cell morphology analysis.

The two partners will also further develop the screening model by reading the images with applied chemical biology techniques, structural biology, bioactivity, interactome, transcriptome, and metabolomics.

Researchers will apply the technology to developing antibacterial agents.

“Antibacterial resistance is one of the major global health issues that the Institut Pasteur International Network is working on,” said Spencer Shorte, chief scientific officer of Institut Pasteur Korea, and Dr. Christophe Zimmer,  head of Institut Pasteur’s imaging and modeling unit. “We would like to develop technologies that can benefit the Institut Pasteur International Network and the global scientific community through this joint research.”

IPK CEO Jee Young-mee also said, “IPK, founded through scientific and technological cooperation between Korea and France, has been using global network pool and will develop an effective drug that can treat infectious diseases that threaten us by using the expertise of researchers of Institut Pasteur International Network and advance our technology for new drug development.”

The Institut Pasteur’s global joint research team is a virtual unit where the company conducts studies in cooperation with international researchers with expertise.

The company has formed nine Institut Pasteur international research teams since 2016 and established three Ai3D global research units recently.
