Abbott Korea launches FreeStyle Libre 2 CGM device
Abbott Korea said it released FreeStyle Libre 2, a blood glucose monitoring system for individuals grappling with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The new product provides real-time blood glucose updates, measured by the minute over a span of 14 days, in addition to its customizable alert features via smartphone.
Patients with only type 1 diabetes can receive reimbursement for using this device.
FreeStyle Libre 2 allows patients to continuously monitor their blood glucose level, eliminating the need to scan their phones to the sensor. It also features automatic smartphone alerts that guide users in regulating their blood glucose levels when they veer too high or low. Once attached, the sensor delivers uninterrupted and precise measurements for 14 days, essential for those looking for effective diabetes management. Abbott 's PR agency has refrained from disclosing specific details regarding what sets their product apart from competitors such as Dexcom.
Abbott has been at the forefront of introducing and enhancing awareness of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technology since the launch of FreeStyle Libre in 2020.
Kang Seung-ho, General Manager of Abbott’s Diabetes Care in Korea, said FreeStyle Libre 2’s innovative, user-friendly design and consistent and accurate blood sugar readings is why millions of people with diabetes globally, including Korea, rely on the system.
In Korea, self-monitoring blood glucose tests (SMBGs) have traditionally served as the bedrock of diabetes management. However, challenges abound with this traditional method, ranging from the discomfort of frequent finger pricks to the inconvenience of round-the-clock glucose testing and monitoring schedules. Moreover, SMBGs provide only momentary glimpses into blood glucose levels, limiting the ability to track fluctuations comprehensively over a 24-hour period.
Freestyle Libre 2 addresses these challenges by offering convenience and real-time insights to monitor blood glucose trends, Abbott Korea said. The device consists of a small sensor worn on the body, delivering continuous glucose measurements, eliminating the need for frequent finger pricks.
The price varies depending on the prescription level and the patient’s financial circumstances.
It is accessible with a doctor's prescription and can be purchased online.
With blood glucose levels accessible in real-time via the Freestyle LibreLink app, users can leverage optional alarm features to monitor blood sugar dynamics, aligning their dietary, medication, and exercise choices accordingly.
