SNUH to build a regional emergency medical safety net in Cameroon
Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH) will help strengthen the emergency medical system in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
The hospital said Wednesday that it has been awarded the “PMC (Project Management Consultancy) project to build an emergency medical system in Cameroon” under the auspices of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).
Over the next five years, SNUH will conduct global social contribution activities to strengthen the local emergency medical system centered on the national emergency medical center of Yaoundé in Cameroon called “CURY.”
The project aims to strengthen public health security and reduce “preventable deaths” by improving the quality and accessibility of emergency medical services in the Yaoundé region of Cameroon.
SNUH will provide comprehensive consulting services, including training emergency medical professionals, new and upgraded training centers, and equipment supply and maintenance. It will activate a project coordinating committee and an operating committee to discuss a plan to build emergency medical governance with Cameroon’s health authorities.
The project's general manager is Professor Shin Sang-do of the Emergency Medicine Department. Professor Shin has completed projects in Cameroon to manage emergency medical centers' follow-ups and build medical personnel capacity.
Jeong Jung-sik, a former professor of emergency medicine at SMG-SNU Boramae Medical Center and deputy director of CURY, will head hospital management.
The field director is Dr. Yoo Ki-woon, who has 30 years of experience as a firefighter. Yoo is bridging the Cameroonian Ministry of Health, KOICA, CURY, and Seoul National University Hospital in Cameroon.
“As the local manager of the PMC for Seoul National University Hospital, I will combine KOICA's international development cooperation project capabilities with my 30 years of field experience to build an emergency medical safety net in Cameroon,” Dr. Yoo said.
SNUH President & CEO Kim Young-tae said, “Based on Seoul National University Hospital's emergency medical capabilities and international cooperation achievements, we will contribute to improving Cameroon's emergency medical system and establishing a community health safety net.”
