SK chemicals wins approval for easier-to-swallow kidney disease drug
SK chemicals has received regulatory approval for a granular formulation of its phosphate binder Invela (sevelamer carbonate) on Tuesday, according to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.
Approved in 0.8g and 2.4g doses, the new formulation is indicated for managing high blood phosphate levels in chronic kidney disease patients undergoing dialysis. Granules dissolve more easily than tablets, offering improved swallowing and potentially faster action.
Sevelamer carbonate is a non-metal, non-calcium binder that prevents phosphate from being absorbed in the gut.
The carbonate version is considered safer than older sevelamer hydrochloride, with fewer gastrointestinal side effects and a lower risk of metabolic acidosis—a common complication in dialysis patients caused by acid buildup in the blood.
