Korea University Medicine chosen to build 700-bed future hospital in Dongtan
Korea University Medicine (KU Medicine) will build its fourth hospital, a 700-bed facility, in Dongtan 2 New Town in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province.
KU Medicine announced on Monday that Hwaseong City and the Korea Land and Housing Corp. (LH) evaluated its master plan, medical capabilities, community contributions, and research strategy, and confirmed KU Medicine as the preferred negotiation partner.
The upcoming Korea University Dongtan Hospital will be developed as a complex medical campus centered on a top-tier general hospital with over 700 beds, a recovery and rehabilitation hospital, senior welfare housing, and officetels. By organically connecting medical, welfare, and residential functions around a central plaza, it will create a life-friendly medical city where citizens naturally enjoy healthcare and daily life.
This hospital aims to be a “future hospital” that provides new medical experiences, according to KU Medicine. It will fully implement future medical technologies, such as AI-based clinical support systems, digital twin operations, and smart infrastructure, KU Medicine said.
The new hospital aims to become a dynamic next-generation medical research hub, where precision medicine, convergence research, and talent development come together. With plans to build a cutting-edge research platform, the hospital aims to seamlessly integrate clinical data, biohealth, and AI, opening exciting opportunities for innovation, it added.
The project involves construction partners Woomi Construction, BS Hanyang, and Hyosung Heavy Industries, with Mirae Asset Securities and Hana Bank joining as financial partners.
KU Medicine said it is committed to expanding its research infrastructure and specialized center network by fostering dynamic collaboration among Anam, Guro, and Ansan hospitals, unlocking greater synergies across pioneering fields such as AI, precision medicine, and translational research.
“It is deeply meaningful that KU Medicine is leading the establishment of this tertiary general hospital, which residents of the southern Seoul metro region have long awaited,” said Yoon Eul-sik, Korea University’s vice president for medical affairs and director of KU Medicine. “Korea University Dongtan Hospital is a project that presents an unprecedented future medical city model that integrates research, education, and residential living beyond mere treatment and care.”
Yoon continued, “We will expand KU Medicine’s research and educational capabilities to the next level in Dongtan, building a future medical ecosystem that grows alongside the community.”
