The Catholic University of Korea Catholic Medical Center (CMC) said it has set about developing a large-scale AI medical image model in collaboration with Kakao Brain, an AI research institute.

CMC and Kakao Brain signed a memorandum of understanding last Wednesday.

The center said there are high expectations of its upcoming project, as it would help medical professionals maximize the efficiency of medical image reading and increase the accuracy of diagnosis through mega-scale AI technology in the domestic healthcare market.

In the joint project, CMC will conduct mega-scale AI model research on the medical image, medical consultation, academic exchange, and support for searching pipelines in the medical image field. Kakao Brain will provide the necessary research infrastructure, professional research staff, and technology, manage clinical trial approval for technology commercialization, and commercialize the finished service.

In addition, they will expand research areas of AI-related medical image services from x-rays to CT, MRI, and ultrasonic imaging and continuously search for expandable pipelines and verify clinical trial usefulness simultaneously.

“We expect to develop an advanced medical image service by grafting Catholic Medical Center’s cutting-edge medical infrastructure to Kakao Brain’s technology,” said Kim Dai-jin, president of Catholic Information Convergence Institute. “We will lead the AI medical image service field in collaboration with Kakao brain.”

Kakao Brain CEO Kim Il-du said, “We are delighted to participate in research on mega-scale AI medical image service together with Catholic Medical Center. We aim to expand the research business field by applying Kakao Brian’s unrivaled technology.”
