Korea's new covid-19 cases on Tuesday nearly tripled from the previous day, amid growing concerns from health officials about the possibility of a resurgence of the virus during the winter season.

On Tuesday, Korea added 33,248 new Covid-19 infections, including 87 cases from abroad, bringing the total caseload to 25,164,695, according to the KDCA.

Tuesday's tally also more than doubled from a week ago, when the corresponding figure was 15,466.

It was the first time that daily infection cases doubled from the previous week since July 18, when the caseload was 26,275, up 2.07 times from the previous week.

The government is on high alert as the spread of Covid-19 intensifies whenever the number of confirmed cases doubles compared to the previous week.

The nation also reported six more Covid-19 deaths, raising the death toll to 28,856. The fatality rate stood at 0.11 percent. The number of critically ill patients came to 247, down one from the previous day.

Meanwhile, the nation started implementing quarantine measures to prepare for the upcoming College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) on Nov. 17, including moving test takers who tested positive for the Covid-19 virus to a separate test center to take the test.

Those who test positive or show Covid-19-related symptoms on the day of the CSAT exam will be able to take the test in a separate test room in the general test center.

Also, from Nov. 14, three days before the CSAT, all high schools and schools used as test centers across the country will change to remote classes to help health officials thoroughly quarantine the test sites.

According to the KDCA, about 44.68 million among 52 million Koreans have been fully vaccinated. In addition, about 33.6 million people had received their first booster shots, and 7.5 million had their second booster shots.
