Mathematicians forecast that the number of new daily Covid-19 cases would decrease over the next two weeks.

A team of mathematicians at the National Institute for Mathematical Sciences (NIMS) released a report on Thursday, saying that the size of Covid-19 infections is likely to shrink in Korea going forward.

Kwon Oh-gyu, head of the public data analysis research team at NIMS, said new Covid-19 cases are likely to fall from 67,415 on Wednesday to around 25,000 on Dec. 14.

Kwon came up with such a calculation, considering the amount of people’s movement aggregated from KT mobile communication location data and the cumulative number of confirmed cases by city and province from Nov. 16-30.

However, the government said people should stay vigilant against Covid-19, citing the emergence of new variants, waning vaccines’ efficacy, and more activities indoors in the winter.

The nation's new Covid-19 cases fell below 60,000 on Thursday amid lingering concerns over a virus resurgence during the cold winter months.

The country reported 57,079 new Covid-19 infections, including 43 cases from overseas, bringing the total caseload to 27,155,813, according to data from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).

The daily figure is down from the 67,415 reported the previous day.

The growth in daily infections has slowed in recent weeks, with the sliding reproduction rate.
