The clinical study results of SK Biopharmaceutical's Zero Glasses and Zero Wired, its integrated wearable devices that can predict seizures by measuring bio-signals from brain activity, heart rhythm, and body movement, were disclosed at the recent American Epilepsy Society (AES 2022) in the U.S., on Dec. 2-6.

The device was developed to overcome the invasivenesss of intracranial electroencephalography (EEG). It is equipped with a general tonic-clonic seizure (GTC) detector based on accelerometer and electrodermal activity, with EEG-based focal seizure detectors still in the development stage.

The research team, led by Professor Kim Hun-min of the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescents at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital conducted a study on 14 epilepsy patients (9-27 years old) from March 11, 2021, to March 10, 2022. The study recorded the time when the patients had seizures on the mobile app.

At AES 2022, Kim suggested that the device would have a significant effect on detecting seizures in the future based on the 1,686 seizures successfully identified over 3,723 hours during the study.

“Unlike the traditional EEG seizure recording method, which relies on testimony from patients and guardians, data-based accurate seizure recording will enable improved EEG management,” Kim said. “The device can continuously measure EEG for more than eight hours and transmit collected data to the server in real-time, making it convenient for EEG seizure research.”

Kim also noted that most of the patients who participated in the study wore devices for more than a month without any inconvenience.

SK Biopharmaceuticals recently won the CES 2023 Innovation Awards for these integrated wearable devices.

The company said it would develop Zero Wired as an AI-based EEG seizure detection and prediction medical device through further clinical verification.
