The government is promoting a plan to lift the obligation of  wearing masks in public transportation soon.

According to the Central Disease Control Headquarters (CDCH), the government has been looking at the Covid-19 quarantine situation for about a month after easing mask rules indoors on Jan. 30, and is now reviewing the lifting of face mask rules on public transportation with experts.

“We plan to announce the results after discussions with the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters (CDSCH),” the CDCH said.

Given the recent quarantine situation, the government had previously sought opinions from the National Infectious Disease Crisis Response Advisory Committee on whether lifting the mask duty in public transportation would be reasonable.

The Infectious Disease Advisory Committee discussed this agenda on Tuesday, and it was reported that a number of experts gave positive opinions.

According to committee insiders, most experts gave a positive opinion as most people still wear masks indoors even after the government lifted such rules.

As a result, the government will comprehensively review the opinions of the advisory committee and the opinions of related ministries, and announce the specific implementation timing through the CDSCH meeting next week.

If the government decides to lift mask rules on public transportation, citizens will only have to wear masks at medical institutions, pharmacies, and facilities vulnerable to infection.

The government is also reviewing lifting the seven-day mandatory quarantine for confirmed Covid-19 patients.
