Korea Orphan and Essential Drug Center (KOEDC) has reported a supply disruption of Ivexproglycem Suspension (ingredient:  diazoxide), which is used to treat hypoglycemia caused by hyperinsulinemia.

Ivexproglycem Suspension is used as a temporary measure before surgery for conditions such as non-operable pancreatic islet cell tumors or pancreatic extra-pancreatic malignant tumors in adults and renal hypersensitivity, pancreatic cell dysplasia, Langherhans cell histiocytosis, pancreatic islet cell tumors, or pancreatic islet cell tumor syndromes in infants and children.

If hypoglycemia persists, the drug can also be used after surgery.

The supply disruption is due to the cancellation of the drug's license after its validity period expires.

KOEDC reported the supply disruption of Ivexproglycem Suspension on April 4, with the final supply date being June 30.

According to reports, no alternative medication can replace Ivexproglycem Suspension. As of April 4, KODEC only has 291 doses in stock and is considering an emergency drug import.

KOEDC has also requested opinions from healthcare organizations on the impact of the supply disruption on patient care.

Notably, KODEC asked for advice on the availability and suitability of alternative medications (including off-label use) for each indication based on domestic and international treatment guidelines, with a response deadline until April 20.

The orphan drug center also requested opinions on the possibility of replacing the drug with foreign licensed products, the need for emergency approval and import, and the potential for increased demand due to public panic-buying when supply shortage information is disclosed.
