Kakao Healthcare has taken the first step toward building a data-driven leading model for clinical trials.

Kakao Healthcare said Thursday that a consortium it formed with Kyung Hee Medical Center has been selected as a research conductor to develop new technologies for smart clinical trials. The consortium will conduct research until December 2027.

The research project aims to standardize data based on medical big data and develop new drugs through a clinical platform. Kakao Healthcare will standardize medical data and develop a platform.

The company is also preparing for related businesses using its position to support the proper use of medical and healthcare data. Starting with this research project, Kakao Healthcare will conduct data-based global clinical trials, such as Real World Data (RWD) and Real World Environment (RWE), aiming to expand its pipeline to new drug development and establish a leading model.

"Global pharmaceutical industry is moving to develop new drugs based on clinical data, but integrating digital and data-related technologies is slow,” Kakao Healthcare CEO Hwang Hee said. “Kakao Healthcare has healthcare business capabilities based on IT and data technologies. Based on this, we will build a platform for clinical sites and actively seek collaboration with global pharmaceutical companies."

Professor Yeon Dong-geon of Kyunghee Medical Center, the head researcher of the consortium, said, "We will create an ecosystem that supports the development of new drugs by standardizing medical big data and building an innovative platform, lead smart clinical trials, and secure governance."
