A pregnant woman who ended the life of Gold Miss to start a family is determined to give birth to a healthy child through natural delivery. However, a pregnant woman's motivation alone is not enough to give birth naturally, especially when she is older. Still, there is no need to feel guilty about having a cesarean section, blaming oneself for “insufficient efforts.”

"I know that the characteristic of Gold Misses is that they can do everything if they try. However, natural childbirth does not happen just because they try hard," said Dr. Yoo Jung-hyun, head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Bundang Jesaeng General Hospital, in the YouTube channel "I'm a Doctor.” Yoo pointed out that natural childbirth is possible only when the “birth canal” through which the child comes out opens up.

There is a reason why natural childbirth is especially difficult for pregnant women who were a "Gold Miss," an unmarried woman with a high socioeconomic status and level of education.

"Your pelvic bones have to keep opening to give birth. However, the baby's size is about the same (regardless of the mother's age), but the opening of the birth canal is limited as you get older," Yoo said. "Therefore, pregnant women who are over 37 or 38 years old should not necessarily insist on 'natural childbirth.'"

Of course, natural childbirth is a better option than a C-section because it doesn't involve an incision in the abdomen and avoids the risk of surgical bleeding and infection. However, it can also be more difficult than a cesarean section if the labor is difficult.

"There is a path for urine in front of the uterus and a path for feces behind the uterus," Dr. Yoo said. “When the baby comes out of the birth canal, both the front and back urine and feces passages can be injured, and if they are injured, it is more difficult than a cesarean section. If you think there is such a concern, it is much safer to have surgery."

There is also a reason some women suddenly have a cesarean section after trying to go through natural childbirth for quite a while.

"The reason for considering surgery during natural childbirth is that the birth canal is difficult to open," Yoo said. "Some women can open it, and some cannot. Usually, the most difficult time is when the uterine door opens three to eight centimeters. If it stays like that for a long time and doesn't open, the baby can't come out, and even if it does (after a while), it's too difficult. The way to avoid this is surgery."

Of course, if the prospective mother and baby are healthy, they can try to give birth naturally till the end. However, if their pelvic bones don't open up enough and the birth canal remains slightly dilated, they'll have to go through a difficult natural birth and then a cesarean section. This is why medical workers in the delivery room who know all the ins and outs are more likely to opt for a cesarean from the beginning.

Dr. Yoo, who married at 42 and gave birth at 44, also had a planned C-section.

"I didn't think I could stand the pain of labor because I know the process from beginning to end. If you don't know, you do it, but if you know, you can’t do it," she said, explaining the higher C-section rate among delivery room staff is that they are knowledgeable about labor.
