Severance Cardiovascular Hospital recently announced that they recorded a total of 25,000 arrhythmia treatment results since 1986 -- the highest number among Korean hospitals.

Among the 25,000 treatments, more than 19,500 were radiofrequency catheter ablations and around 5,900 were implantable electrical devices such as pacemakers.

In particular, more than 5,600 of the 19,500 radiofrequency catheter ablations were for atrial fibrillation catheterization. With the implantable devices, approximately 1,900 defibrillator and cardiac resynchronization therapy device insertions were performed.

Furthermore, the Cardiac Department at Severance Hospital has also recorded the highest cumulative number of cardiac pacemaker procedures, which currently stands at 180.

“Based on our long treatment experience and a wide variety of treatment options, the success rate for cardiac-related treatments at the hospital is high and treatments can be tailored according to the patient's condition,” said a hospital representative.

Severance Cardiovascular Hospital Arrhythmia Center has been leading the domestic arrhythmia treatment field.

In 1969, a cardiac pacemaker procedure was performed on a bradycardia patient with a slow heartbeat, marking the first arrhythmia treatment in Korea.

In 1986, the hospital introduced electrophysiological tests to find the exact site of arrhythmia and electrode catheter ablation for the first time in Korea.

Severance Cardiovascular Hospital is equipped to provide full-cycle treatment from diagnosis to post-operation management of patients with arrhythmia procedures, and cardiac function tests, alongside outpatient and inpatient treatment.

Also, based on the hospital’s expertise and research studies of arrhythmia diseases, the Cardiac Department has produced a large number of domestic arrhythmia specialists and is actively conducting training and education for physicians in other countries.

Professor Joung Bo-young of Internal Medicine at Severance Cardiovascular Hospital, who has been leading the domestic treatment of arrhythmia diseases, said, "We will strive to develop and research the latest treatment for incurable arrhythmia to improve patient lives through preventive treatment."
