Severance Hospital has recently implemented an innovative smart bed management system, leveraging Wi-Fi technology and e-Paper, to efficiently handle room occupancy records and patient identification.

The smart bed management system automatically displays the patient's information on the room's occupancy chart and patient badge throughout the entire process, including when the patient is admitted to a ward, transferred, or discharged.

Severance Hospital has completed the implementation of the system on 737 occupancy sheets and 2,597 patient name tags in all wards, intensive care units (ICUs), and emergency rooms.

The smart bed system displays patient information such as name, gender, age, registration number, hospitalization information, and patient safety information.

In the event of an emergency, the patient's illness severity level is also displayed, allowing for a quick response.

The information displayed also varies.

General wards display round times made by doctors, ICUs, consent to withdraw life-sustaining treatment, and neonatal ICUs, basic information about the infants.

According to the hospital, the smart bed management system has also reduced the workload of medical staff.

Most hospitals currently use paper identification tags containing the patient's identification number and name attached to the patient's room or bed, which takes 5 to 10 minutes per patient.

"Considering that hospitals required filling out about 300 patient identification cards per day, the introduction of the smart bed management system has greatly reduced such paperwork," the hospital said.

Along with the introduction of smart beds, Severance Hospital is also modernizing its medical business based on the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT).

The recently introduced medical asset tracking IoMT solution enables efficient operation and management of assets, such as tracking the location of key assets and detecting the temperature of medical refrigerators that contain vaccines, blood, and reagents.

IoMT can also be applied to monitoring patient vital signs, electrocardiograms (ECGs), and fluids.

Also, through an automated monitoring dashboard system, Severance Hospital plans to create a safe medical environment by detecting patient abnormalities, establishing a rapid response system, and preventing patient safety accidents.

"With the convergence of numerous IoMT technologies and medical information, Severance Hospital realizes safe and efficient digital healthcare services for both medical staff and patients," said Professor Lim Joon-seok, who is in charge of Severance Hospital's Digital Health Division.

The hospital will continue to create a new safety culture in hospitals by incorporating IT technology into various areas of the hospital, Lim added.
