Well-known dictators are talked about not only for their politics but also for their lifestyle. That included their body shape and appearance. Sometimes, their favorite foods and testimonies about what made them gain weight are in the spotlight. These autocrats even have their own "signature" foods. What are the foods that made them so big?

South Koreans need to look no further than the northern half of their divided peninsula and its obese young leader – Kim Jong-un.

365mc, a clinic specializing in obesity treatment, said Friday it has found some reasons behind the obesity of the world's famous dictators. It analyzed the lifestyle habits of the three most obese dictators – Joseph Stalin, Idi Amin, and Kim.

Stalin had an addiction to heavy-drinking banquets every night

Stalin is best known for his use of banquets as a means of maintaining power.

Records show that Stalin would begin meetings as late as 9 p.m., eat dinner until midnight, and stay up until 5 a.m. drinking and telling stories. There's also the famous story of Stalin forcing his subordinates to drink alcohol and make mistakes so that he could exploit their weaknesses.

These living patterns are like express trains to obesity. Constant drinking, irregular meals, late-night snacking, and lack of sleep are optimal conditions for obesity. A late-night snack after eating all three meals can contribute to accumulating extra pounds on your upper arms, abdomen, thighs, and face. In addition, since there is no activity after eating, the calories are stored as body fat.

"The combination of late-night eating, alcohol consumption, and sleep deprivation can lead to abnormalities in the secretion of appetite-regulating hormones, causing people to seek out stimulating foods," said So Jae-yong, director of Seoul 365mc LAMS Special Center specializing in liposuction. "This can disrupt the dieting rhythm and lead to a vicious cycle of obesity."

Kim Jong-un's love affair with Emmental cheese

The obesity and health of Kim Jong-un is a frequently discussed topic in South Korea. Until recently, his health status was known to be rather serious. Due to his morbid obesity, Kim is believed to have dermatitis, gout, allergies, and cardiovascular disease.

He is still trying to lose weight for his health, but it's not easy, as he has been on and off diets in recent years, gaining weight.

Emmental cheese has been mentioned as one of Kim's favorite foods. It has been described as a "slice of Switzerland," but it is high at 255 calories per 100 grams.

According to Japanese chef Kenji Fujimoto, who worked as a personal chef for Kim Jong-un’s father, Kim Jong-il, for 13 years starting in 1989, the junior Kim enjoyed eating Emmental cheese, sushi, and steak.

"Cheese is rich in calcium, protein, and good fats, and steak is a great high-protein meal, but if you are morbidly obese, you should reduce your intake to lose weight," So said. "If you are particularly concerned about your weight, ask for a smaller portion of rice when ordering sushi, and stick to lean fish."

Idi Amin, the ‘Black Hitler’ who had a weakness for fast food

Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, dubbed the "Black Hitler," was also a big man. His story made front-page news back in the days when he was known for his massacres of civilians, purges, and bizarre behavior.

Amin was a glutton and a meat eater, and after exile, he turned to fast food. Amin's chef, Otonde Odera, revealed that he had to cook Amin baked pies with a mixture of beef, animal kidneys, onions, tilapia dishes, lamb pilaf, and chocolate pudding.

Amin later enjoyed fried chicken and pizza in exile in Saudi Arabia, and according to Amin's son, Jafar Amin, fried chicken was Amin's favorite food. As a result of his fattening food choices, Amin lost his youthful health and struggled with obesity and high blood pressure in his later years.

Obesity contributes to high blood pressure.

"Hypertension is a progressive disease that can lead to bigger problems such as myocardial infarction and cerebral hemorrhage if left untreated, so it should not be taken lightly and should be managed early," So said. "Fortunately, patients with hypertension who are also obese can expect excellent blood pressure reduction effects just by losing weight."

What culinary habits do these three autocrats have in common?

The lifestyle habits of the three dictators are not unfamiliar. You also can end the day with cans of beer or cups of wine and the “delivery of the day.’ Don’t you think yourself somewhat similar to Stalin enjoying a late-night banquet?

If you are a night owl like Kim Jong-un or have been eating fatty foods like Idi Amin, there's a chance your bulging belly isn't the result of a quick binge but a slow accumulation of fat.

The truth is, we all know the answer. If we don't want to get fat, we need to live a fat-free lifestyle. However, weight control is not so easy that even dictators with absolute power cannot control themselves.

"If you find it difficult to manage your weight on your own, you can visit an obesity clinic to receive obesity treatment that suits your situation, such as liposuction, fat extraction injections, behavioral modification therapy, and medication," So said.
