Representatives of interns and residents have demanded the voluntary resignation of Lim Hyun-taek, president of the Korean Medical Association (KMA), the nation’s largest group of physicians.

They said that if Lim doesn't step down, the KMA delegates should vote for a no-confidence motion (impeachment).

The Korean Intern Resident Association (KIRA) released a statement on Thursday. It comes three days ahead of an extraordinary meeting of the KMA’s delegates, where a motion of no confidence in Lim will be presented. The statement was signed by 89 representatives of interns and residents at training hospitals, including Park Dan, the head of KIRA’s emergency committee.

“We demand KMA President Lim's voluntary resignation, and we ask the delegates to impeach Lim.” the statement said.

It also said they could work in solidarity with the new KMA president. “We hope that under a new president who can understand and communicate with us, the two organizations can build mutual solidarity,” the statement said.

The KMA's board of delegates will hold a general meeting on Sunday to decide whether to vote against Lim. If more than two-thirds of the delegates are present at the meeting, the motion of no confidence will be put on the agenda, and if more than two-thirds of the delegates present vote in favor, it will be passed. Lim will be immediately suspended from office if the motion of no confidence passes.
