[RSNA 2024] AI dominates landscape at world's largest radiology conference

CHICAGO, Ill. -- By Lee Han-soo/Korea Biomedical correspondent – Artificial intelligence (AI) continues to dominate the landscape at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) 2024 conference, with this year's theme "Building Intelligent Connections" putting a spotlight on the ethical and intentional integration of AI technologies in medical imaging.
RSNA 2024 kicked off its five-day event on Sunday at the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago, Ill.
Celebrating its 110th anniversary, RSNA is the world's largest scientific and educational meeting for radiologic sciences. The event brings together radiology professionals, including radiologists, radiologic technologists, radiation therapists, nurses, and exhibitors from around the globe.
RSNA 2024, opened its doors on Sunday at the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago, Ill. According to organizers, the exhibition features 657 technical exhibitors occupying nearly 400,000 square feet of space, including 96 first-time exhibitors, marking a notable expansion from the previous year.
This year's conference places special emphasis on empowering radiologists for the future through AI advancement while maintaining a strong focus on human innovation, collaboration, and progress. The comprehensive program includes seven plenary sessions, more than 3,000 posters and exhibits, over 800 scientific presentations, and over 300 educational courses, providing attendees with various learning opportunities.
Korea Biomedical Review captured some of the scenes and booths of multinational and Korean medical device companies exhibiting at the RSNA 2024 meeting. RSNA 2024 is open from Sunday to Thursday this week.
The AI Showcase zone continues to grow in size and interest, as the conference has put its emphasis on AI for three consecutive years.
Lunit presented 20 research abstracts at RSNA 2024, with two key studies showcasing their AI solutions' effectiveness. The first study demonstrated that Lunit INSIGHT DBT achieved high accuracy in breast cancer detection across diverse patient populations, maintaining consistent performance regardless of race, ethnicity, age, and breast density. The second study, which won the Trainee Research Prize, showed that Lunit INSIGHT CXR significantly improved clinicians' interpretation of chest X-rays across multiple pathologies, with the AI system achieving exceptional accuracy in eight out of 10 conditions.
VUNO is showcasing its FDA-cleared products at RSNA 2024 in Chicago, with a focus on VUNO Med-DeepBrain, an AI solution that analyzes brain MRI images and segments them into over 100 regions in under a minute. The company is also launching VUNO Med-Chest X-ray Triage, their recently FDA-cleared AI solution that rapidly detects conditions like pneumothorax and pleural effusion in chest X-rays.
Coreline Soft showcased its AI diagnostic product line AVIEW at RSNA 2024, where they will demonstrate various solutions including AVIEW LCS for pulmonary nodule analysis, AVIEW CAC for coronary calcification analysis, RT ACS for organ segmentation, and AVIEW Modeler for medical image 3D modeling and printing. The company will present multiple research papers, including studies on AI technology for classifying parenchymal clusters in lung cancer screening, content-based image search technology for improving reader agreement in IPF diagnosis, and various other innovations using deep learning for thoracic imaging analysis.
AIRS Medical showcased their MRI acceleration solution SwiftMR at RSNA 2024. The company has scheduled multiple presentations, including a Lunch & Learn session and two AI Theater presentations featuring a presentation discussing SwiftMR's clinical validation and a first-hand experience of how a hospital generated significant revenue using the SwiftMR solution.
Neurophet introduced Neurophet AQUA, their brain neural degeneration imaging analysis software that now includes Multiple Sclerosis (MS) analysis capabilities. The company is also showcasing Neurophet AQUA AD, a total solution for Alzheimer's disease treatment that provides comprehensive brain imaging analysis by quantitatively analyzing MRI and PET images during anti-amyloid therapy. At the AI Theater session, Neurophet's co-CEO Been Jun-kil will discuss the importance of early detection and monitoring of ARIA (Amyloid-Related Imaging Abnormalities) using AI technology to enhance the effectiveness and safety of Alzheimer's disease treatments.
Other Korean companies, such as ClariPi, Promedius, Phantomics, and Medical IP were also located throughout the AI showcase zone and attracted attention from visitors.

Aside from the AI Showcase zone, medical device companies also featured new equipment that uses AI to provide better imaging or results this year.
Philips unveiled its latest AI-powered diagnostic and treatment imaging innovations at RSNA 2024, including the BlueSeal helium-free MRI system, the industry's first wide-bore, helium-free MR scanner with integrated AI capabilities, and the AI-enabled CT 5300 featuring Precise Image reconstruction software. The company is also addressing critical challenges in radiology, including staff shortages and increasing patient volumes, through intelligent imaging systems and cloud-based informatics solutions, with their Spectral CT 7500 showing significant improvements in diagnostic sensitivity and reduction in follow-up scans.
At RSNA 2024, GE HealthCare presented a comprehensive lineup of over 40 innovations, highlighted by their new AI solutions including Clarify DL for enhanced bone imaging and nCommand Lite for collaborative workflows. The company has expanded their portfolio with advanced offerings like CareIntellect for Oncology, which leverages generative AI for patient data management, while also strengthening their nuclear medicine capabilities through the MINItrace Magni cyclotron and expanded Omni Legend platform.
Siemens Healthineers introduced its new Naeotom Alpha class of photon-counting CT scanners at RSNA 2024, including the dual-source Alpha.Pro for high-performance imaging, the single-source Alpha.Prime for routine care, and the upgraded flagship Alpha.Peak. All three scanners, pending FDA clearance and expected to launch in early 2025, feature Quantum HD technology for 0.2mm slice thickness imaging and mark Siemens' transition to exclusively offering photon-counting technology for their high-end CT systems.
Canon Medical Systems showcased numerous innovations across their product lines at RSNA 2024, including new Deep Learning Reconstruction technologies for CT, AI applications for MR, and High-Definition detectors with AI solutions for Angiography. In ultrasound, the company is introducing new collaboration enhancements and specialized tools like Liver Analysis, while their Nuclear Medicine division is launching performance and workflow improvements for their Cartesion Prime PET-CT system.
t RSNA 2024, Bayer showcased its expanded radiology portfolio, including the newly FDA-cleared MEDRAD Centargo CT Injection System and their Cortenic Connectivity Platform, while also announcing seven new AI collaboration agreements to expand their Calantic Digital Solutions marketplace. The company is presenting new clinical data for gadoquatrane, their investigational MRI contrast agent in phase 3 development.
Samsung is showcasing enhanced medical devices at RSNA 2024, including their updated RS85 ultrasound and X-ray systems. Their new floor-mounted GF85 X-ray system features AI-powered lesion detection, bone suppression technology, and S-Vue imaging engine for reduced radiation exposure, designed to expand Samsung's presence in the digital X-ray market.
Fujifilm is showcasing new medical imaging systems at RSNA 2024, including AI-enhanced MRI systems, automated digital radiography suites, and an upgraded CT scanner with motion correction capabilities. The company is also introducing the ARIETTA 750 DeepInsight ultrasound system and the Persona CS Mobile Fluoroscopy System, both featuring advanced visualization technologies.
Hologic is unveiling its latest breast health technologies at RSNA 2024, headlined by the FDA-approved Envision Mammography Platform featuring 2.5-second scan times and patient-adaptive tilt positioning. The company's new Genius AI Detection PRO solution enhances cancer screening accuracy by incorporating deep learning algorithms for 2D and 3D imaging analysis, along with integrated breast density scoring and comprehensive patient data management.
