Myongji Hospital said it opened the first Reconstructive Surgery Center in northern Gyeonggi Province region, establishing a comprehensive treatment system that integrates cancer and trauma surgery with advanced reconstructive procedures.
The new center, led by Director Choi Jae-min, specializes in a wide range of reconstructive surgeries, including breast and head and neck reconstruction, lower limb reconstruction, facial trauma repair, pressure sore management, and scar revision, all designed to improve patients’ quality of life.
The center operates a multidisciplinary care system that brings together Myongji’s Breast Center, Integrated Cancer Healing Center, and Robotic Surgery Center. This allows for a seamless, one-stop treatment process from preoperative planning through to reconstruction, supported by personalized, dedicated patient care.
In breast reconstruction, the center covers not only post-mastectomy procedures but also corrections for congenital deformities such as Poland syndrome and defects resulting from trauma or infection. Minimally invasive surgeries using the da Vinci Xi robotic system minimize incision sizes while maximizing the precision and quality of reconstructive outcomes.
For head and neck reconstruction, the center addresses defects following surgeries for oral, laryngeal, and sinus cancers, as well as trauma and infection-related facial and cervical injuries. The use of microsurgical vascular anastomosis enables complex tissue transplants to restore function, with close collaboration among specialists in otolaryngology, neurosurgery, medical oncology, and radiology to maximize treatment effectiveness.
Following the opening ceremony, the hospital hosted a symposium highlighting the latest trends in reconstructive surgery. Notable presentations included Professor Jeon Byung-joon from Samsung Medical Center on "Personal tips in implant-based breast reconstruction," and Professor Ahn Hee-chang from Bundang CHA Hospital, who provided an overview of head and neck reconstructive procedures.
“Treatment does not end with simply removing disease; it must support patients in fully returning to their daily lives,” Choi said. “The Reconstructive Surgery Center will help rebuild both the function and appearance of our patients, contributing to the restoration of their lives.”
Myongji Hospital Chairman Lee Wang-jun said, “Reconstructive surgery expands the boundaries and completes the capabilities of surgical practice.”
With this new center, Myongji Hospital has established a truly comprehensive surgical system across all specialties and as the only dedicated reconstructive surgery center in northern Gyeonggi, the hospital expects to generate strong synergy with other surgical departments and achieve significant growth, Lee added.
