Discussions have begun to reduce the legal burden associated with medical accidents, but the medical community remains cautious.

That’s due to concerns that it could turn into a debate over “special treatment” for the medical community. At a policy discussion forum on measures to ease legal responsibility for medical accidents, a professor from Seoul National University College of Medicine began her remarks with an apology.

Professor Ha Eun-jin of the Department of Neurosurgery at Seoul National University College of Medicine cautiously stated, “In the current situation where there is criticism and controversy over special treatment toward the medical community, I am concerned that addressing this issue may be perceived as a demand for special treatment.”

Professor Ha was attending the “Policy Discussion Forum on Strengthening the Medical Accident Safety Net” at the National Assembly Members’ Hall on Wednesday.

“Frankly, I am also concerned about proceeding with this discussion immediately without having sufficiently apologized for the confusion and loneliness that patients and the public have felt over the past year and a half,” she said.

“Considering the professional responsibilities and weight of the medical profession, if we had been aware of the social repercussions of our actions, we should have apologized for not doing so. I apologize for that,” Professor Ha continued.

Professor Ha expressed regret over the situation where patients and medical staff do not trust each other.

“Doctors are team leaders who strive to achieve the best possible outcomes for patients. That team consists of residents, nurses, patients, and their families. The team works together to heal the patient," she said, emphasizing the importance of restoring trust.
