Professor Koo Do-hoon of the Department of Thyroid and Endocrine Surgery at Inje University Haeundae Paik Hospital led an international medical exchange by demonstrating the latest single-port (SP) robotic thyroid surgery.
Haeundae Paik Hospital announced on Tuesday that Professor Koo recently demonstrated the latest SP robotic surgery to Dr. Suh Hyun-suk, founder of American Endocrine, a U.S. center specializing in endocrine surgery, and the thyroid robotic surgery team of a regional university hospital.
Professor Koo has consistently performed SP robotic surgery on numerous high-complexity thyroid cancer patients with stable outcomes. His expertise, recognized both at home and abroad, led to this demonstration. Professor Koo's clinical surgery site became a platform for educational and academic exchange among Korean and international medical professionals.
“The Single Port Retroareolar Approach (SPRA) thyroidectomy performed by Professor Koo appears to effectively combine the characteristics of SP equipment with the advantages of the existing BABA (Bilateral Axillo-Breast Approach) surgical method,” Dr. Suh said. “It was satisfying to be able to observe it directly at Haeundae Paik Hospital.”
Professor Koo remarked, “SP robotic surgery offers high patient satisfaction by simultaneously achieving cosmetic benefits and rapid recovery through minimal incisions. We will continue to advance patient-tailored surgical techniques and lead the development of robotic surgery through active exchanges with other Korean and foreign medical professionals.”
Professor Koo's research team achieved the first 700 thyroid robotic surgeries in the Busan-Ulsan-South Gyeongsang area and was selected as a “Da Vinci Robotic Surgery Observation Training Center” by Intuitive Surgical, the world's largest manufacturer of robotic surgery medical devices.
