Johnson & Johnson (J&J) Surgical Vision Korea said Friday it has launched TECNIS Odyssey IOL, a new multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) for cataract surgery, expanding its portfolio of presbyopia-correcting implants.

The TECNIS Odyssey IOL is designed to be implanted in adult patients with aphakia following cataract removal to address both presbyopia and vision correction. It provides a continuous range of clear vision, maintaining visual acuity better than 0.2 logMAR from distance vision (+0.5D defocus) to near vision (−3.0D defocus).

Unlike conventional multifocal lenses that split light into multiple focal points -- often causing reduced contrast sensitivity, halos, or glare -- the new lens applies extended depth of focus (EDOF) technology.

Instead of creating separate focal points, the EDOF approach elongates the focal range, reducing visual disturbances and increasing tolerance to refractive errors. The company said the lens demonstrated fewer halos and glares compared to its predecessor, the TECNIS Synergy OptiBlue IOL.

Built on J&J’s TECNIS platform, which has been used worldwide for more than 20 years, the Odyssey joins a lineup that includes TECNIS Synergy OptiBlue IOL, TECNIS Eyhance IOL, and TECNIS PureSee IOL, offering cataract patients a range of options tailored to their lifestyle needs.

According to the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, Korea had an estimated 1.5 million cataract patients in 2024. Cataracts remain the most common eye disease among the elderly and a leading cause of vision impairment and blindness worldwide. Cataract extraction and IOL implantation is widely regarded as the most effective treatment.

“Cataract-related vision loss significantly reduces quality of life, so while the primary goal of surgery is to restore vision, enhancing daily living through improved sight is equally important,” said Sung Jong-hyun, General Manager of J&J Surgical Vision Korea. “TECNIS Odyssey offers patients a new option to experience continuous vision at different distances while minimizing halos and glare, helping improve both vision and quality of life.”
