Myongji Hospital held a symposium on Wednesday at the hospital in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, to commemorate the opening of its Thyroid Center, sharing the latest knowledge on diagnosing and treating thyroid diseases.

The symposium, commemorating the launch of the Thyroid Center, which was established as a separate entity from the previous Breast and Thyroid Center in May, was attended by experts nationwide who shared their clinical experiences and treatment strategies.

The first session of the symposium, which consisted of two sessions, was chaired by Professor Kim Jung-soo of Myongji Hospital.

At the session, Professor Kim Wan-sung of Myongji Hospital, who is also director of the center, presented “Ultrasound-guided cytology and histology of thyroid tumors,” in which he discussed ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA) and core needle biopsy (CNB) techniques, indications, and diagnostic applications for repeat examinations.

Professor Kim Hee-jun of the CHA University Ilsan Hospital followed him, presenting “Methods and utility of neuromonitoring in thyroid surgery” to prevent injury to the retroglottic nerve and supraglottic nerve external branch.

Professor Nam Kee-hyun of Severance Hospital chaired the second session. At the session, Professor Chai Young-jun of SMG-SNU Boramae Medical Center presented clinical cases of trans-oral robotic thyroidectomy (TORT) for thyroid tumors, highlighting the benefits of precision and nerve preservation compared to conventional endoscopic surgery.

Professor Kim Kwang-soon of the Catholic University of Korea, Seoul St. Mary's Hospital, followed him, presenting “Transaxillary approach robotic surgery for thyroid cancer” and emphasizing that robotic surgery is an essential option, not the approach itself, but instead whether it is performed.

“This symposium, which was held for the first time after the opening of the center, is a meaningful starting point for enhancing medical expertise and strengthening collaborative networks,” said Professor Kim Jung-soo, an authority on robotic surgery for thyroid cancer who began practicing at Myongji Hospital in May. “We will provide patient-centered, customized treatment based on precision diagnosis and robotic surgery.”

In his congratulatory speech, Myongji Hospital Chairman Lee Wang-jun said, “This symposium is a meaningful occasion to announce the independent launch of the Thyroid Center to the public and strengthen its expertise and presence.”

Myongji Hospital will continue to invest in and support the center to accumulate surgical capabilities and clinical experience further, thereby growing into a leader in the field of robotic thyroid surgery, Chairman Lee added.
