Philips Korea said it selected Seoul Clinical Laboratories (SCL) as its first digital pathology reference site in Korea.
Under the agreement, both organizations will work collaboratively to elevate the field of digital pathology and foster technological advancements to streamline diagnostic efficiency and accuracy.
Digital pathology solutions enable digitization of pathology images collected during diagnostic examinations. The digital tools, bolstered by analytical software, can support early detection and precise diagnosis of critical conditions, such as cancer.
By digitizing these processes, SCL expects to enhance the efficiency of large-scale pathology testing, improve data management speed, and ensure secure and accessible patient data—ultimately advancing quality care and precision in healthcare.
Notably, SCL and Philips Korea will focus on three primary areas -- internal and external training on Philips’ IntelliSite Pathology Solution, collaboration in publishing clinical white papers in the digital pathology sector, and the establishment of a global network to implement remote pathology systems.
Since November 2022, the two parties have been working together to implement digital pathology solutions, completing the installation of necessary IT infrastructure—including servers and storage—in April 2023.
The project also integrated Image Management System (IMS) and Laboratory Information System (LIS) functionalities for seamless interoperability. Final stabilization and setup were completed in September 2023, making SCL the first testing institution in Korea to successfully implement a comprehensive digital pathology system.
“It is an honor to partner with SCL, the first specialized testing institution in Korea to integrate our digital pathology solutions, as our reference site,” a Philips Korea official said. “Through this partnership, both organizations will lead innovations in digital pathology diagnostics, fostering collaboration across various pathology fields.”
SCL Healthcare Group Chairman Lee Kyoung-ryul also said, “The digital pathology system not only enhances diagnostic precision and efficiency but also streamlines workflow for medical professionals, underscoring its growing importance.”
Through this partnership, SCL will work with Philips to build a global network in digital pathology, strengthening its competitiveness in the global market, Lee added.
